After her escape from the witch trial, Saoirse fled west over the land, eventually finding herself in the small village of Broch Mordha. She wandered the marketplace for a while until eventually, she came upon a market stall that sold apples. The merchant was too busy with a customer to notice the cloaked figure that swiped an apple from one of his barrels, but another bystander noticed. That bystander confronted her, but because he saw how ragged and hungry the girl looked, he instead showed her kindness and gave her an apple instead.

That man introduced himself as Jamie Fraser, and he offered her charity in the form of food, a bath, and rest, which she was in no condition to decline, even if she was wary of him. She went with him to Lallybroch, where she soon found out that he was the Laird of the estate. On her first night, Saoirse was in too much despair and too hungry to speak much, but at breakfast the following morning, she answered the Laird's questions, yet covered the truth with lies out of fear that she could be returned home and executed for witchcraft.

She told him that her family took ill from a plague that swept through Glenelg, which she claimed was her hometown rather than Torridon. Her father sent her away for her own safety, and that's how she came to be in the marketplace, stealing food to survive. When she told him that she doesn't know if any of her family is still living, but she hasn't stayed in one place long enough to send a letter and receive one back, Jamie offered to house her at Lallybroch long enough to write home. In exchange, Saoirse offered to work as a healer for the estate and nearby village.

The story leaves us where Saoirse is the new healer who is still finding her footing at Lallybroch, with the intention of leaving as soon as she hears back from home. More will be added here as more details are written that become important to her story!
